RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio — As jet planes rev their engines and take off from the Cuyahoga County Airport, a group of men on a large, manicured field on Richmond Road play a game that was before baseball.

The Cuyahoga Cricket Club faced the Dublin Cricket Club in a match between teams of the Midwest Cricket Tournament (MCT) league.

Cricket, often compared to baseball, is more of a global sport with a popular audience outside of the United States. Gradually, more people with roots in cricket-playing countries are bringing their game to Northeast Ohio.
“We have players from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in our team,” said Muhammed Bilal Quershi, captain of the Cuyahoga Cricket Club. “There are a lot of teams in Ohio and it’s growing in the area.”
Like most players, Quershi started playing the game at a young age. In its native Pakistan, the game has an avid fan base and is played in both organized leagues and pick-up games. Pakistan’s national team is among the best in the world.

In the United States, it takes a bit of searching to find games, but Quershi was able to find a team the way people find anything: He Googled it.
It seems there are many different cricket teams and clubs in Northeast Ohio. Quershi and his teammates compete in the top tier, known as Division 1 — a level of cricket in the MCT.
They played against other Ohio teams in Kent, Columbus and Dayton and finished as runners-up in the 2019 finals.
There are also teams in Northeast Ohio that participate in Division II and III leagues based on their experience and skill level.

Northeast Ohio boasts four cricket grounds where local teams can play: Warrensville Heights, Lee Road, Columbia Station and the Airport Grounds in Richmond Heights.
“It was minor league cricket that started in America,” said teammate Sashyam Durbha. “This will lead to players going to official Major League cricket starting in a few years.”
Locally, Quershi, of Chagrin Falls, said they are in talks to acquire three more farms in the area and are in the development phase of starting a program at Kenston High School in Geauga County.
