Australian Red Cross Queensland – As hundreds of thousands of people continue to be affected by the floods in eastern Australia, local Red Cross teams are there to support them.
Thousands in Queensland were evacuated due to severe storms and flooding, and as flooding forced evacuations in New South Wales, volunteers rushed to help.

The Salvation Army and the St Vincent de Paul Society have set up appeals to collect donations to go towards flood recovery efforts in New South Wales and Queensland.
The St Vincent de Paul Society, better known as Vinnies, has established two separate appeals for recovery efforts in each state.
The Salvation Army accepts donations for both states here, and the funds are to be distributed where they are most needed.
The organization hopes to raise $9 million for the cause and has pledged to donate another $1 million itself.

Salvation Army Major Bruce Harmer urged Australians to show the spirit of generosity seen in past disasters across the country.
“Once again we are calling on Australians to help us get there for the incredible number of people left homeless by the floods. Please, if you can, give to the Salvation Army’s 2022 Flood Appeal,” he said.
Shoppers at Myer stores nationwide can also donate to the Salvation Army appeal at checkout, as well as customers at Woolworths stores in NSW and QLD from tomorrow.
Foodbank Queensland is also raising funds for its Foodbank Queensland Flood Emergency Appeal 2022 to help get emergency supplies of food and water to flood-affected Queenslanders.

The GIVIT organization has created a list of more than 68,000 items needed in the recovery effort, with options for donors to send the items or pay to buy them.
The organization strongly advises people not to send unsolicited donations to affected areas, noting that unsolicited donations hamper the recovery efforts of many charities.
Locals in flood-affected areas generously donated items to relief centers that sprang up in towns.
Workers at some relief centers also said they receive too many donations of things they don’t need.

A volunteer at an emergency center in Lismore said an abundance of clothing was donated, while phone chargers, toiletries and inflatable mattresses were requested.
Queenslanders are calling for the revival of the “Mud Army” of volunteers who helped clean up after the 2011 floods.
Brisbane City Council and Volunteering Queensland are calling for volunteers to sign up for Mud Army 2.0 to help clean up Brisbane.
People can join the army or register to alert the army where its help is needed.

There are currently only plans to establish a mud army in Brisbane, but Volunteering Queensland has encouraged people from other regions who want to volunteer to stay tuned for further updates on volunteer groups. Australia Post and Australian Red have teamed up with Cross to support communities in Queensland and northern New South Wales affected by severe flooding by accepting donations for the Red Cross QLD and NSW Floods Appeal at participating post offices across the country.
Funds raised will help the Australian Red Cross provide vital humanitarian support to flood-affected communities by deploying specialist emergency response volunteers, providing vital psychological first aid and support to evacuation centers and helping affected residents contact loved ones, Australia Post said today.
“This is a very emotional time and our thoughts go out to the many people and communities affected by the devastation of these floods,” Australia Post Head of Community Nicky Tracey said.
“I would like to acknowledge and express my heartfelt thanks to all members of our team on the ground who play a critical support role, and also to the emergency services and volunteers who are working hard to support people at this location.”

Red Cross acting director of Australian programs Garry Page said the record rainfall had created a huge demand for Red Cross support.
“Our staff and volunteers have rallied to meet this demand, in some cases despite facing flooding and isolation involving their own homes and families,” said Mr. Pages.
“Funds raised from the flood will help the Red Cross provide immediate and long-term humanitarian support to people in flood-affected communities.
“Our disaster relief efforts take many forms, with volunteers and staff helping with evacuations, relief centers and outreach, and supporting people and communities to recover from these floods and build disaster resilience.”
