GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A mechanic has had his arm amputated after working with a dangerous machine at a US Postal Service facility in Greensboro, N.C., according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
“The United States. The Postal Service ignored well-established safety standards and put workers at risk,” said OSHA Regional Director Kimberly Morton.
According to USDOL, a mechanic suffered a “life-changing” injury on Sept. 27 at the USPS Greensboro Network Distribution Center. A worker reportedly came into contact with a car that was supposed to be a security guard, but the guard was removed.
The department said the facility where the injury occurred was “a bulk mail processing and distribution center where a programmable network of heavy conveyor lines and other systems processes packages for delivery.”

The injury prompted an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigation that allegedly found repeated and serious safety violations, including the failure to provide security guards.
USDOL reports that personnel are not trained to work safely around conveyors or use “lockout/tagout” safety measures.
The facility also allegedly allows workers without proper training or protective gear to test live electrical equipment.
