Botanical Drawing Classes Melbourne – In this course you will be guided through the process of creating a series of illustrations using nature as your inspiration. Each week you will explore different drawing skills and techniques to help you create works of art inspired by the beauty we find in nature. Although nature is our inspiration, the drawing skills taught in this course can be applied to any subject. This class is suitable for absolute beginners.

Melanie graduated from RMIT in 2012 with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) and a Masters in Arts Management.
As an artist, curator and arts manager, Melanie has worked in many capacities in the arts. She has exhibited in various group exhibitions, including a major solo exhibition at Latrobe Regional Gallery in 2015 as recipient of the annual Dick Bishop Memorial Award, and has staged solo exhibitions around Melbourne and Gippsland. Most recently she won the People’s Choice Award for the Roy Art Prize and was a finalist for the Collins Place Art Prize. Melanie splits her time between Melbourne’s north and her large studio in South Gippsland. With a studio that backs onto an area of reforested land, native plants are always present in Melanie’s work. Specialist workshops designed to focus on one of the key aspects of botanical art are held over the Easter holidays and in January during the June/July period. We welcome everyone to register for our specialized workshops, but please remember that all participants for face-to-face workshops are vaccinated twice. Participants who register for a class but cannot attend due to non-vaccination will not be refunded. We appreciate your understanding.
In botany, shading is an essential skill because it creates the illusion of reality. In this course we will practice and sharpen our shading skills on a variety of white or pale, smooth and textured subjects. We will look at cast shadows as a device in art, and the process of designing and creating such shadows in our own works.

Relax – breathe deeply – and connect with nature through botanical art. This fun yet meditative practice helps develop your artistic eye through careful observation and attention to detail.
Explore illustration and design principles, watercolor techniques, color mixing and paper types in small group sizes in a relaxed and fun environment.
This workshop requires no prior experience and is for all skill levels – from those who have never picked up a paintbrush to those looking to brush up their skills.

This class is maintained by the Object Forum. We are a social enterprise whose mission is to support artists and craftspeople on their creative journey, whether they are established professionals or simply curious about a new craft.
All of our classes are artist-led and the proceeds from these workshops go directly to support our creative community. Our classes are held in our very cool and conveniently located studio on Melbourne’s Hardware Lane.
We understand the importance of connection, which is why most of our workshops are limited to about 12 participants. This way, you have time to chat with your classmates while getting quality one-on-one tutoring time with your teacher. Yes, of course we’ll offer you a nice glass of prosecco or a cold beer – we care about all our students!

Botanical Art In Australian Museums: Revival And Relevance
Guild of Objects is a space where everyone has the support and space to pursue, source or explore their own innate creativity. The forum provides space for artists, craftspeople and manufacturers to market their products. The guild conducts workshops in a beautiful home-like environment that gives everyone the opportunity to explore their own creativity and ultimately organizes and runs guild design, craft and art tours in Japan, Bali and France to provide a forum to ‘explore the world’. Cancellations – The Object Forum reserves the right to cancel any scheduled workshop. In the event of a Guild of Objects workshop cancellation, you will receive a full refund or the option to transfer to the next class.

The Object Forum recognizes the health risks of people coming together, but events like the workshops are an essential part of our community and can continue to be a safe and fun place if everyone does their part.
The purpose of the forum is to support artists, designers and artisans and accordingly our workshops provide financial support for the artists who work with us.
At all of our events we apply additional hygiene measures to minimize the possibility of contamination. This includes increasing the frequency of handwashing facilities and cleaning of common areas.
We have limited the number of participants per workshop to 12 as this ensures that recommended social distancing can be maintained between participants.

Born in the UK, Diane attended the National Gallery of Victoria, School of Art before studying art at tertiary TAFE and high school level. She discovered her interest in botanical art while studying horticulture at Burnley Horticultural College. Diane has been drawing and exhibiting since the early 1990s, her background in fine art and interest in botany and horticulture combined to lead her to a new career!
Botanical Art Society Of New Zealand
She has won the Celia Rosser Medal for Excellence in Botanical Art three times, in 2002, 2004 and 2016. Her work can be found in private and public collections in Australia and overseas, including The Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, Ballarat Regional Gallery, City of Melbourne Collection, Esso, and The State Botanical Collection at the National Herbarium of Victoria.
Dianne currently works for The Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne where she has been running workshops and classes since 1996. She also leads regular botanical and natural history painting workshops in regional Victoria and interstate.
A professional graphic designer, Helen has worked in both the secondary and tertiary education sector, teaching art and design and graphic communication.
Helen’s botanical watercolor illustrations are represented in the National Botanic Gardens of Victoria Collection, The Government House Florilegium Project, The National Library of Australia, The Illustrated Garden Collection (Royal Botanic Gardens), The Huntington Library (California), The Hunt Institute of the Huntington Library.
