Customers looking to buy alcohol online are facing a drought over Christmas and New Years after retail giant Woolworths decided to delay the launch of its e-commerce platform on the discount liquor store website.
Dan Murphy’s online store has been in operation for more than a year and has temporarily pulled out in favor of a more traditional business.
“We’ve been very busy over the Christmas period, so we’ve moved the website to January so our teams can focus on the brick and mortar business,” Woolworths told Australia in a statement.
“We delayed changes and major change projects over the Christmas period. This is just one example of a delayed release to give us enough breathing room to be able to serve our customers 100% in the new year.”

The retail giant said it had confidence in Dan Murphy’s website but needed to ensure the platform could handle the flood of traffic from Christmas and New Year deals.
“We are very confident (in the sites themselves) but we need to make sure our logistics systems and sites can handle the traffic,” Woolworths added.
Woolworths developed Dan Murphy’s online component using the same platform that already powered Dick Smith and Big W’s e-commerce activities.
The retail giant’s beverage division will reduce its phone ordering business as it expands its online store offerings, The Australian Financial Review reported.
