E&s Mixer – Rotary DJ mixers may seem like a current fashion, but the reality is exactly the opposite. DJs began their reign on these knob-laden machines in the 1970s with several early mixers including UREI’s 1620 and Bozak’s CMA-10-DL2. Its resurgence was due in part to the launch of the portable E&S DJR 400, which showcased the power of high-resolution analogue rotary mixers and isolators.
If you’re a DJ who learned on fader mixers, the transition to rotary mixers can be awkward. Not only is it harder to scratch and fight, but traditional EQ bands are replaced with isolators that allow you to handle a wider range of frequencies and offer more gain per band. This is great for creative mixing and filtering, but can inadvertently lead to extreme and unpleasant results for DJs unfamiliar with isolators. But practice long enough and you can develop your own knack for mixing.

At just £389, the TRM-202 is by far our cheapest choice; German brand Omnitronic is known for affordable products rather than high-end audiophile kit. The sound of the TRM is definitely a step below any of the more expensive options, and the build quality is a bit off (although there are aftermarket woodworking kits available that make the whole thing a lot nicer). However, it is suitable as a first rotary mixer for DJs who are not sure if they will like the feel of rotary faders. You may not have a full hi-fi experience, but the ergonomics are similar to mixers four to five times the price.
UK-based MasterSounds is at the forefront of turntable technology, offering turntables, studio monitors, modified Technics turntables and a variety of other vinyl goodies. The two-channel Radius 2 is their entry-level DJ mixer. You don’t get a lot of features for your money, but that’s the point: no bells and whistles, just high-quality audio. Audio capabilities are provided by high-pass filters on each channel and a three-band master EQ/isolator.
For best results, it’s designed to be paired with a MasterSounds FX unit (£495), which adds analog modeled reverb and delay effects, plus real analog filters and distortion circuits. MasterSounds also has a four-channel Radius 4 to play with priced at £1,089.
Other than perhaps the UREI 1620 from the early 1980s, the definitive rotary mixer is the Bozak CMA-10-2DL from the 1970s. It was originally hacked together from public address mixing desks by Rudy Bozak, with the support of New York club sound system guru Alex Rosner.

It is a measure of the global popularity of rotary blenders that brands have sprung up around the world to meet the demand for subtly different options. Australia’s Condesa Electronics is one of many boutique brands offering a small range of handcrafted mixers with a good level of customization as part of the ordering process.

The little brother of the more retro AR-6, the AR-4 is a four-channel recording unit with a very similar layout and function set to other current mixers. It might come as a bit of a surprise that it’s actually more expensive than a fully featured AR-6. But you pay a premium for a nicer case, wood sidewalls, VU meters, and a smoother finish compared to the AR-6’s 19-inch utility rack case. Neither mixer is a bad choice by any means, with similar electronics at heart. It’s a solid option that harkens back to the 70s icon.
The latest product from Barcelona’s Can Electric is the Taula 4 MR, which builds on the revered reputation of the original Taula 4 and Taula 2. Given the name, you can probably guess the setup pretty well: four channels, each with two bands. EQ and send effect control, plus a large three-band isolation section on top. Standard stuff for a boutique rotary mixer, perhaps, but sound quality is the focus here, and the Taula delivers in spades.

The flagship model of the MasterSounds range, the 4V is in every way the big brother of the Radius 2. The valve-equipped mixer has a few more channels, a three-band EQ per channel, an assignable crossfader and level meters LEDs. for each input.

The recent surge in interest in rotary mixers can largely be attributed to Parisian electronics engineer Jerôme Barbé of E&S. Originally commissioned to repair his old UREI mixer by DJ Deep, Barbé took his creative input and developed a new mix from scratch with the intention of updating the sound of the classic rotary mixer for modern use. Several design iterations later, the DJR 400 is the flagship in the small E&S line.

Manufactured in the UK by Formula Sound, the DN78 is available in several different specifications, but the general approach is common to all models: a super retro design (you can also spec bakelite knobs if you want a bit of a steampunk vibe) , but with high-end modern sound quality.
The unique selling point here is the Phantom Valve output stage, designed to add classic valve warmth to the signal. Unlike the MasterSounds Radius 4V, which uses the valves as a very thin buffer, the DN78 pushes the saturation a little harder, but allows you to bypass the valve stage if you don’t want to color the signal.
Many big names have produced rotary mixers over the years – including Pioneer DJ, Allen & Heath and the now defunct Vestax – but the balance of power has recently shifted, leaving the smaller newcomers in charge part of the market. .

The only exception is Rane, whose MP2015 remains the last real option from the larger commercial brands. Significantly different in approach to boutique models, the four-channel MP2015 features digital CDJ inputs plus USB ports for Traktor/Serato compatibility. Swiss company Varia Instruments has upgraded its lovely two-channel RDM20 to a four-channel monster, the RDM40. Sporting large knobs and a minimal design, it would fit in an old research lab and even in your DJ setup. With a smooth 12db/octave three-band isolator on each channel and a steeper 24db/octave isolator on the master channel, you should have plenty of options for creative mixing.
The famous solid metal mixer has been in the works for several years, with Varia Instruments shipping the first batch in January 2021. With its VU meters, LED signal levels and sturdy construction, this mixer is perfect for retro fanatics -futures.

If you are looking for the best, this could be it. As the flagship of the ARS range, the 6700 initially looks like a classic Bozak mixer, but closer inspection reveals it’s a much more advanced affair. In addition to the self-proclaimed “handcrafted Japanese precision engineering”, the real selling point is the presence of dedicated three-band isolators on each channel, plus a five-band master EQ.
The 6700 is like Bozak on steroids, built to an insanely high standard and with unrivaled sound quality. It’s big, bold and beautiful… the only downside? That price. Ouch.
