Bangkok and Siem Reap are two of the most popular destinations in the Southeast Asian region. Both are world famous for their magnificent ancient temples, vibrant cultural heritage and warm and hospitable people. The best part is that it is easily accessible by both air and land.
Flight Bangkok Siem Reap

Thailand & Siem Reap Passion
In a nutshell, the most efficient and comfortable overland route is the direct bus. Giant Ibis Bus is the most reputable company operating this route. You can search for buses and reserve seats: Bangkok – Siem Reap Bus.

Anyway, here’s a sample itinerary. Please note that the budget estimates at the end of each itinerary are inflated to cover other incidental costs. As we always say, it is better to overestimate than to underestimate.
We use the currency used in each city. Bangkok uses the Thai baht. Siem Reap is in US dollars.

This trip ran a round trip route from Bangkok via Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia. It’s a short trip of two flights and a six-hour bus ride. Total shipping cost was only $185. As usual in Asia, the cheapest flight I found was 2600 baht with AirAsia. $79 one way. Buoy!
One of the reasons AirAsia is cheaper is because it flies from the former Don Mueang Airport, which is now a hub for LCCs and Thai domestics. If you plan to return to Cambodia and fly to BKK, be sure to check if your flight departs from Suvarnabhumi (international airport). Otherwise, allow at least 4 hours of travel time to clear customs, collect your luggage, arrive at Don Mueang Airport with little traffic, and check-in.
On the plane you will be given a visa application form which will be processed as soon as you get off the plane. If you have $20 ready, you can get a visa. Some people charged $25 for unknown reasons. Bring at least $30 just in case. I also need a photo. The official site says 2″ x 2″, but on the foam it’s 4cm x 6cm. Again, I don’t think they care as long as it’s your image and you have your $$. Note that there are cashiers to the right of the customs area that dispense US dollars (all cashiers in Cambodia pay in US dollars, which is the preferred currency), but don’t rely on it. Please have cash on hand.
Siem Reap & Bangkok Vacations
When you exit the airport terminal area, you will see a taxi rank in front of you. Note: All taxis and tuk-tuks have a flat rate. And by fix I mean a mafia fraud. I ordered an air-conditioned limousine car and the most battered tuk tuk. Both quoted us $9 for a 6km ride into town. I was hot and tired and had luggage, so I took a taxi. Sure enough, when I got to the hotel, the driver showed me the official ticket and told me the price was $12. I think it was $9 for the person who called the cab and $3 for the driver. you know

It was $80 a night including all taxes and Agoda’s commission. It’s not cheap, but I had a room with a private pool, so it wasn’t expensive either. Based on walking in all directions all day, I can say that these are the areas I would probably stay in again.
At the end of 178th street along the river you will find many bars and restaurants and a great place to relax while the sun goes down. I read a lot online about having a beer at the Foreign Correspondents Club, but the locals I know there said it was very expensive and the food was better than anywhere else. We were across from 178, on the 2nd floor of the River Crown restaurant enjoying ourselves. great food and the same great views…and happy hour 50 cent beers. Life is good 🙂
Most people traveling between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap use planes, boat trips, buses and taxis. I like to travel overland to experience the scenery, and would like to avoid long boat trips. Also, I’m very cheesy when I travel alone, so the bus was the bus for me.
So which bus company is the best? The two big ones are Ibis and Mekong Express. The Ibis is bigger, newer and more comfortable… but when I checked, I was told there was no toilet on board, so I took the old and slightly shabby Mekong Express. I didn’t need a bath, but I followed the condom philosophy. You may never use one, but you’ll want to carry a condom just in case you need one on rare occasions. And on a 6-7 hour bus trip with only one stop along the way, you don’t want to be without a bathroom after a night of 50 cent beers and spicy food. Also, you don’t need luxury when you ride the bus. As for the price, the Mekong is about $13 for foreigners, but I think I paid $15 at the hotel because they arranged everything. Yes, if you check the Mekong site, you will see that foreigners only pay $13 and Cambodians only $10. In case you didn’t know, this kind of double pricing is standard operating procedure in most Southeast Asian countries. I know some travelers are getting their panties in a wad over this… and I can also understand why this bothers people. Not because things were cheaper for locals…it’s because foreigners are almost always ripped off in terms of prices, especially in tourist areas. So, especially if you are on a tight budget. For young travelers, this could add up. Keep in mind that you’ll be paying more than any local price you could have quoted anyway.
If you don’t fancy the 45 minute ride in an old van full of strangers, find your own way to the Mekong (or Ibis) bus terminal. A local tricycle will take you there for less than $3 (depending on how hard you haggle). The minivan that picked me up, on the other hand, took a much less direct route.
