Fraser Island is located in the Gippsland Lakes Reserve, about 15 kilometers south-west of the entrance to the lakes. The 30-hectare island is a green and coastal paradise, ideal for sunbathing or getting back to nature. Since first being settled by Europeans in 1865, the island has been home to a goat farm, a small dairy and the family holiday home of The Age co-founder David Syme. These days, it hosts weddings, team building events and vacations for those who love the idea of an island lifestyle (that’s everyone).

Walking paths line the island of gummy bears, and thick coastal scrub runs right down to the sand. Exfoliating helps keep your private island private; you can run naked if you want, but we don’t recommend it (sun safety first, people). You may want to avoid nudity for another reason. Unless you’re lucky enough to be able to rent private islands, you don’t want to, you’ll probably want to get a group of friends to split the cost. The good thing is Fraser Island Retreat can accommodate almost 50 people, with 38 beds on the property and 10 outside beds (banish the kids there).
Inside the 11-bedroom property, the decor veers between IKEA-style Schmick minimalism and country kitsch. It’s unpretentious, but definitely a step up from the holiday parks of your childhood summer vacations. The back yard is fully equipped for cooking, with a huge kitchen with two gas stoves, gas grill, refrigerator, freezer, ice maker and dishwasher. You really need a big group to get the most out of the island, otherwise you’ll be left alone.
The choice to throw away or not is yours. The retreat has a swimming pool, bicycles, football, cricket, bocce and totem pole facilities, two tennis courts and a nine-hole golf course for busy bodies, as well as plenty of scenic spots for couch potatoes to relax. There are also games rooms with pool table, table tennis, air hockey table, PS3 and bar. You can cook up a storm outside with a gas grill, wood fired pizza oven and burner. Picture it: you, your loved ones, the sunset and a slice of handmade wood-fired pizza. What does peace look like?

Fraser Island Retreat Lakes Entrance, Lakes Entrance
Arrival is a four-hour drive from Melbourne to the North Arm at the entrance to the lake. From there it’s a 30-minute trip to Fraser Island by island ferry, water taxi or private boat. There is secure parking near the North Arm pier.
