Grey Ironbark Decking Prices – Our Australian and Fijian hardwood decking is available in standard sizes of 140mm x 21mm, 135mm x 20mm and 90mm x 20mm. All our floors are non-tropical rainforest – certified hardwood. We offer both new and reclaimed hardwood for all residential and commercial applications, including (curved) roofing at no extra charge.
Our standard hardwoods are: iron gray and red bark, turpentine, spotted gum, tallow and Fiji white mahogany. Our deck wood is kiln dried to 9-14% moisture to meet New Zealand’s environmental requirements. Our Australian hardwoods are all Class 1 timber (40 years plus natural durability) and Fijian White Mahogany is Class 2 hardwood – same as Kwela, Garapa.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT! Much of New Zealand’s hardwood decking industry uses rainforest timber such as Kwela, Garapa, Vitex and Purple Heart to name a few. “50% of the world’s rainforests have been destroyed in the last 40 years” – quoted by David Attenborough, so the next time you buy hardwood decking, instead of being price conscious, maybe be environmentally conscious.
How To Choose The Right Deck For Your Home This Summer
For example, Fijian White Mahogany was planted by the British in the 1960s as a sustainable plantation and is now controlled by the Fijian government, so we have a clear line of sight and path from seed to site.
If you have time, you should read this article about the popularity of Kwela and how this wooden decorative product can be inappropriate: https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/22-02-2019/how-nz -terassi-puuvalinnat -together- human rights -problem-bean-western/
It is very important to have ventilation and air circulation under the deck to reduce cupping and friction. This allows moisture to drain between the top and bottom of the boards and extends the life and performance of your hardwood deck.
We recommend that the base of your deck be at least 250-300 mm from the ground in accordance with the appropriate board spacing. This allows for adequate ventilation. Mechanical installation on all four sides of the cover is also highly recommended.

For Fiji mahogany, a moisture barrier film is required on all tree decks closer than one meter to the ground.
The screws must penetrate at least 35-40 mm into the beams for proper bearing. Nails or screws can be used.
Pre-drilling is essential for nails, while our Wurth 50mm self-tapping screws are an excellent choice unless they are less than 60mm from the edge of the decking, where pre-drilling is recommended.
Our Australian hardwood decking should be at least 8mm away from the decking boards. This allows for some expansion and contraction as the deck boards adjust, as well as allowing for surface water absorption and better air circulation.

Cross ventilation is also necessary to ensure that the terrace has sufficient air flow to ventilate the boards from all sides.
Note: There are different climates around New Zealand and the tree will always respond to its destination. Please contact us if you have any questions about your terrace project and the area you are building in New Zealand.
To reduce spotting, creasing and to maintain the wonderful grain look/beauty of hardwood, we recommend coating the decking boards on all four sides with Intergrains Natures Oil, a Dulux oil, prior to installation. We offer this as a machine finish direct from our Brisbane factory so you can simply install the timber once it has been received on site. After 5-6 weeks of exposure to the weather, an additional cap is recommended after installation.
Note: When sawing decking wood, applying oil to the edges of the boards will help reduce cracking, burring and checking of the ends of the boards – especially with 45 degree miter cuts. It is recommended that when oiled, these corners are also joined together.
Grey Iron Bark 85mm X 14mm (available In 19mm)
We strongly recommend the use of Wurths stainless steel screws (pre-drilling recommended and mandatory with Fijian Mahogany) (bronze colored screw available) to attach the deck to the subframe. We recommend 50-60 mm long screws for 20 mm deck board, two screws per line.
Australian Hardwood Decks should be scrubbed with a stiff brush at least once a year to clean the spaces between your deck boards and remove dirt and grime. This also helps remove excess mold (which occurs when the wood has a moisture content of 20% or more), which can be a slippery slope in wet weather. You can use a high pressure hose, but make sure it’s low pressure so you don’t damage the grain/grains of the wood.
Deck resurfacing: Removing dirt and mold before resurfacing is essential before resurfacing. There are many deck cleaning products, but we choose the products offered by Dulux, because we get a 20% discount on all products and we get the best ones. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using.
Reinstatement – how often? This is a question we get asked all the time. The answer is that it really depends on the direct sunlight on the deck and how much silver you allow for the deck. Due to New Zealand’s strong UV rays, if you want to keep your lid clean, apply it once a year. Otherwise, once every 2-3 years, keep the cover in good condition.
