Holden Commodore Sv6 Wagon – It’s been almost 3 years since GM pulled out of Holden’s local manufacturing operations. With similar closures from Mitsubishi, Ford and Toyota, it was the final nail in the coffin for Australian auto manufacturing and a major setback that is still felt today.
You’d be forgiven for thinking news on that scale was enough for a decade, but a lot has happened since then.

We have an imported Commodore, regarded as a capable, sophisticated all-rounder and certainly capable of filling the Aussie void left by the big VF, but the initial shock and public outcry left the latter unnoticed and unloved. Less ‘cheater’.

Then came word that Holden had decided to cut the Commodore from the local lineup. A quick glance through this announcement and the rest of Holden’s sales figures makes it clear that the end has begun, and GM has rightly announced that Holden will have to exit the market entirely in 2021.
All this talk of ‘no more Commodore’ and ‘no more Holden’ happened around the time of the birth of baby #1, which led to a search for something safer to replace the somewhat agricultural Holden Crewman.
It ran flawlessly for six years and served its owners well, but it wasn’t particularly safe for Bub, wasn’t particularly well-equipped, let alone the maneuverability (fuel economy) of a cruise liner, and I didn’t like it. way, shape or form.
I had only a few viable options to address the aforementioned shortcomings, so my chance to be referred to as one of the best cars ever made in this country was about to materialize.

Initially, I thought I would save a few coins and pick up a VE SS-V Redline Sportwagon with a few kilometers. A trial later he was dismissed. It certainly ticked the practicality and performance boxes, but the interior hasn’t aged well, and I’m not going to buy a V8 for something like a lawnmower.
Next up was a back-to-back between the VF and the VF2 Redline Sportwagon. One push of the starter button was all it really took. I’ll take the 6.2 liter VF2 thanks!
Styling is subjective, but the exterior updates made to the VF2 added an element of aggression where it was needed. Bonnet vents, front bumper air intakes and LED tail lights really help keep things fresh. The 19-inch black alloys and big red Brembo look the business too, especially when paired with the Heron White paintwork.
I wish Holden had developed a stubby 1950s antenna hanging from the ceiling if the wing mirrors were fully color-coded, but overall, this is one of the best looking wagons out there. Nothing beats the styling, but you’re left in no doubt about this vehicle’s intent.

A large, thick, flat-bottomed leather wheel. Big, comfortable sports seats up front, plenty of room for my wide rear, and plenty of adjustments for my 6-foot-6 frame. I would have liked to see a bit more side bolster to help prevent bum slide during really spirited cornering, but since I don’t spend much time attacking mountain roads or racetracks, I’d rather slide…(See what I did there?! Yes, it’s true. My joy knows no bounds. !)
The rear seats are well-padded and accommodating, with ISOFIX points for easy installation of kiddie seats, and there’s plenty of leg, leg, hip, shoulder and headroom for three adults in the back. The roofline is pretty low for a carriage, so be careful to weed out ankle-biters or you could give them (or you) another reason to scream uncontrollably.
The wagon also makes a great road trip car with a capacity of 865 liters with the seats up and 2000 liters down. If you find yourself in a dog house more than enough for weekly shopping, a weekend or a temporary Airbnb.
Looking around the cabin, it’s actually very well put together. Not exactly Audi standards of fit and finish, but a nice mix of leather seats, soft-touch plastics and Alcantara on the passenger front and doors. It’s clear the interior is built to last, and some real thought has gone into the materials used. It should hold up well for years to come, both physically and aesthetically.

The MyLink infotainment system has faced its fair share of criticism over the years, and it can be a bit buggy. A good example of this is the hoops I had to jump through to remove the previous owner’s paired devices from the Bluetooth settings.
After reading a post on Facebook and several owners swearing by it, I recommended turning the car off, opening the door, holding it open for 5 minutes, closing the door, closing the door, opening the door, and starting the engine. Wadia knows. It worked!
After that, no freezing, no blank screen, no issues with touch input. Bluetooth syncs every time, and navigation works great (albeit with 5 year old maps). Missing Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is disappointing, but not a deal breaker as none of my other vehicles have them. So, if it doesn’t fall off, it does what it says on the tin.
Speaking of interior technology, I guess we want kids with heads-up displays. A pretty simple kit as it comes, but it’s bloody brilliant. It can display current speed, speed limit, cruise speed, rev counter and navigation directions from r. It’s not at all intrusive and works in polarized sunlight, meaning you don’t need to take your eyes off the road to constantly check your speed. I find it really strange that so many car manufacturers are still resisting the urge to include this in their vehicles, as it was a major selling point for me on this car. Yes, I’m looking at you, Tesla Model 3!

Comes standard with redline lane departure warning and forward collision warning. The first is annoying. The latter is jumpy, inconsistent and very intrusive. Fortunately, both can be turned off. Blind-spot monitoring, a reverse camera and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard, and commendable considering the smaller wing mirrors fitted to the VF2 range.
Aside from the front and rear parking sensors, auto park assist is standard across the VF2 range, as it is on the VF1, and I’ll be honest, I didn’t get a chance to test it. Although it is on the list. By all reports, it seems to do well in reverse parallel parking, while reversing into a vertical car spot at the supermarket took a bit of a stab.
The feature I enjoy most is the remote start function, so you can hear the 6.2-liter roaring for life. Most people think of it as a ‘look at me’ party trick, but it does serve a purpose, allowing you to pre-condition the car on cold mornings and hot afternoons, and cool it while you do it. A great feature that is frequently used.
Even in 2016, it’s a real disappointment that a car costing close to $60k doesn’t come with adaptive cruise control as standard, especially since my 2015 Liberty had it as standard across the range starting at the time. $30k.

7 airbags, Brembos front and rear, ABS, EBD, ESC and many other TLAs (three letter abbreviations). A five star ANCAP rating means you and your loved ones are as safe as possible in the unfortunate event of an accident.
In short, he is an excellent all-rounder. Once the engine is started and the big Lion idles nicely, it stops with barely a trace, happily slurring the 6-speed auto between shifts, in the shops or on the freeway. Performance available under your right foot.
On dirt country roads, you can tell it’s set up to handle overrides, but it’s also very comfortable, especially when looking at the 19-inch alloys on 245/40 front and 275/35 rear rubber. Economy is very respectable in this environment, sitting at 10 liters per 100km on a regular basis – slightly better if highway tarmac is your choice.
A little heavy with legs, the bogan betrays the complexity of the big wagon. Make no mistake, this stuff drinks like a fish when pushed. If you like the 14-15L/100km factor, you’ve got a steal.

You may find yourself doing this, at least initially. Noise is pumped through the firewall into the cabin by mechanical sound enhancers, ensuring that as the revs rise, so does the volume, as well as feeling included and served.
