A Cathay Pacific flight from Perth to Hong Kong had to make an emergency landing after its engine was shut down, with passengers claiming it was on fire.

The airline said an engine failure caused flight CX170, an Airbus A330 aircraft leaving Perth just before midnight, to be diverted to Denpasar where firefighters were waiting.
“During the flight we heard a loud bang and the plane started shaking, all the lights went out and I looked out the window and all I saw was some flames and some sparks – the wing and the engine were on fire,” he said. .
Sirna said many people were awakened by the drama in the sky that took place off the coast of Bali.
“There were some people who were quite shocked. The girl next to me started to panic and cry, so I tried to calm everyone down. That’s what we had to do.”

The pilot reported a power failure to one of the engines, after which all power in the cabin was cut off.
“Several cries were heard. As soon as we landed and landed, we all clapped.”
“It was reported that a loud noise had been heard and some passengers saw sparks and flames outside the window. We can confirm that what the witnesses saw was a light caused by an engine failure, not an actual fire.”

Cathay Pacific said there was no fire on board and all 251 passengers and crew were safe and unharmed.
