Of course, family cars these days are more than just space so there are plenty of 12v power sockets available, bluetooth for all models, and plenty of active safety tech on offer. Standard equipment in virtually all cars includes Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist (where the car steers to keep you in its lane), Forward Collision Warning to help avoid low-speed collisions, and automatic emergency braking.
If connectivity is more your thing, you can use a proper smartphone connection (such as Apple CarPlay) as well as wireless phone charging. You can choose from four engines: a 118bhp 1-litre petrol, a 138bhp 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel with either 108bhp or 134bhp.
You can get a seven-speed automatic transmission on the more powerful petrol and diesel engines, while the other six-speed manual is standard.
While the i30 Touring used to be £1,500 more expensive than a similar hatchback, the difference is now just £500. If you’re not sure how you’re going to use your car, or how big your home will be in a year or two, it’s just a small enough difference to make it a tempting option.

When the i30 hatchback was introduced in 2007, it was a budget alternative to more established models. A 2012 redesign greatly improved it, improving its gaming performance while also increasing its price — it now competes with entry-level and mid-range Ford Focus models.
Standard equipment on the i30 Tourer is powerful. Even an entry-level car with a basic look and feel comes with Bluetooth phone connectivity, steering wheel stereo controls and daytime running lights.
We recommend the mid-range version over a cheap entry-level car or an expensive premium model. Keep in mind that the Hyundai i30 Tourer will depreciate faster than products from brands like Ford and Volkswagen.
The engines available in the i30 Tourer are neither clean nor powerful, but they are efficient enough to pull the car at decent speeds. If you want a better driving experience, the excellent Ford Focus estate offers a more lively engine and more exciting handling.

The automatic transmissions in the modern range are adequate, especially with the new DCT introduced in 2015, but the six-speed manual excels in driver control and fuel economy.

The mid-range SE trim is a popular option, with the 118bhp petrol engine priced at £18,195 – and an automatic transmission is also available if you want. The diesel engine in SE trim costs £19,595 – a popular option that combines good fuel economy with good standard equipment.

Inside, the i30 Touring is an example of sensible design. Unlike the Focus, which is loaded with switches and buttons, the Hyundai is clean and easy to understand within seconds of getting in the car. The driver’s seat is comfortable, the wraparound rear windscreen lets plenty of light into the cabin, the Tucher will be around £1,000 more expensive than the hatchback, and fuel consumption will be higher due to CO2 emissions and the extra weight of the estate’s body. Buyers will also be pleased to know that Hyundai’s five-year unlimited-mileage warranty also includes five years of roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.
For 2015, Hyundai offers drivers more packages and an efficient engine and transmission combination.
