Readers have identified some in the photos. Opposite the stadium entrance is the Ipswich Arms public house and a landlady in the 1980s sent me memories of her time there and an amusing encounter with the pub’s donkey, George.

In the year I found photos taken by staff photographer Gerry Turner in 1975 in the Ipswich Arms one night /Ipswich Star file.

The photos show a typical local pub of the time with fashion and hairstyles that some people don’t want to forget.
The Ipswich Arms is one of hundreds of closed public houses in Suffolk within living memory. It can date back to at least 1837 when there was a brasserie at the edge of town. The original building was replaced in 1999 and closed and demolished. Nearby is the Royal William, which also closed in 1999. A Lidl store now sits on the site.
My father and I raced at Ipswich Greyhounds from about 1970 until the stadium closed in 1988. We breed most of the greyhounds and all of their names have “Stysted” in them, which is why we live in Essex. We were lucky enough to win the 1984 Ipswich Derby with a terrier called Ballyhee Spirit. He was purchased from Ireland and is probably one of the best haired terriers we have ever had. The bonus amount is £2,000. That’s a lot of money.

The two men who stand out are Dave Smith and George Culver, who both train and breed dogs. I think there are about five bookies in the race with P Cattermole being one of them.

My father They raced the Ipswich Greyhounds in the 1960s. All the dogs had “Charity” in their name. Once my father-in-law drove rabbits through a box in the store. I will help him by giving the winning result. The first time I did that I got a call from the challenger box to look at the board. All results are back to normal!
The bookkeeper was my great-grandfather, Philip Cattermole, born in January 1904 and from Thornham near Eye. I remember one night he was held at gunpoint and robbed of his money and car.
As well as being a bookie he is an Ipswich Harrier and has played for Suffolk and was County Champion.
He won many medals in competitions, we still have. He was made an honorary member of Ipswich Harriers.
