The turning is moderately sharp without being too sensitive, there is a high stickiness from the tire and platform. As you’d expect, there’s some body play, but overall body control from left to right is admirable.
Engine performance is respectable and certainly meets and exceeds other standards in this class for diesel. We did 0-100km/h in 9.61 seconds. Very good for a mid-size diesel SUV. Roll-on acceleration is even more rewarding, with 400Nm available from just 1750rpm. This means that there is absolutely no load on the boat even when going down or up steep hills.

Regarding the debate on whether to go for the diesel or petrol 2.4? In our opinion, it’s an easy decision. The diesel delivers plenty of torque and is available in the normal parts of the rev range. Diesels also produce more power. Yes, it is only 1kW more, but when you consider the average consumption of the two fuels, it is an achievement in itself that the diesel can produce more power while using less fuel to burn. (Official fuel consumption is 8.5L/100km compared to 6.8L/100km for this one). We suspect that real world use would show the same difference, or spread the difference further. We achieved around 7.6L/100km with the diesel in mixed conditions.
Is there anything you don’t like about the driving experience? In fact, the new Sportage is a very popular car. There really aren’t any major flaws. If you’re planning to go off-road, you might want to consider the Si or SLi because they don’t come with large alloy wheels and low-profile tires. We also found some hesitation with the six-speed manual in this test car; there were several times when the engine almost stopped at a very low speed. This may relate to a particular vehicle that needs service or equipment, or that needs to be handled by journalists.
If you’re in the market for a mid-size SUV, the new Sportage is now a real contender. The level of development, building quality, and performance and excellence are in line with international standards. However, this comes at a price, with the latest model priced alongside its stablemate Japanese counterparts. In fact, the price may shock those who think of Kia as a cheap and cheerful brand. As mentioned, diesel is preferred if you can stretch it for the price.
