This XT variant sees the biggest equipment changes in the range with the addition of a rear camera and a new infotainment system.
There are no surprises or major changes compared to the suspended model, as the ride is firm but not uncomfortable when unloaded. There’s no terrible bounce around, and the rear end just sticks to rough roads, causing the odd slide in the rear. In general, it is quite easy to live with.

The steering is a little heavy, but it has a linear and positive feel, as does the clutch pedal and six-speed manual gearbox.

The five-cylinder diesel is strong with decent acceleration and pulling power, and the brakes back it up with good feel and decent stopping power. The cabin is filled with durable plastic, durable and easy to clean with just a cloth included in the door trim and cushions to rest your elbows on. The seats are cloth and have decent bolstering in the front, not the comfortable, loose cabin rear seats. Seats with only a small, firm cushion for your back and lower back are really for kids or adults for lunch from the office.
All shift gears feel good and are easy to use with 4WD and locking differential controls.

There’s plenty of storage too, with decent cup holders and a sunglass holder, but the Sun Visor doesn’t have the r’s vanity mirror.
One point worth noting is the Freestyle cabin doors; Unlike other brands with this body style, the rear hatch doors open and close fully and it feels like there is a B-pillar to close them in the cabin where there is any problem and it feels very small.
The payload for this variant (equipped with the standard Mazda tray) is 1215 kg. 1340 kg without tray. Towing capacity is 750 kg without brakes and 3500 kg with brakes. The maximum weight of the towing ball is 350 kg
Mazda’s general-purpose alloy box is 2100mm long and 1842mm wide, with a 225mm opening door. There are two tie-down rails on each side of the tray and a lockable tool box (below) and water tray are fitted under the back.

With 470Nm of torque available from 1,750rpm and good ratios in the six-speed manual gearbox, the BT-50 didn’t struggle and handled our weight very well at all speeds. As long as you’re in the right gear at the right time, not all hills are a real problem for the Mazda – the only time you need to bury the accelerator is when you’re stopped on a steep hill and accelerating on a flat surface. it was not easy, because the speed was maintained in any situation.
We tested this variant earlier on the plane with a weight of 1000 kg and the suspension reached its maximum limit. This time, with 830 kg on board, the Mazda is more compact and manages its weight in any conditions. Only very rough bumpy roads bothered the UT a bit, resulting in a minimal wave around the rear suspension, but nothing out of the ordinary. The steering was well weighted with positive feel, as were the brakes, which didn’t seem bothered by the weight.
The XT model now has a rearview camera, standard safety-certified stability control, curtain airbags for all passengers, hill-start assist, roll stability control and trailer sway control as standard.
It’s not a deal breaker, but the aftermarket Alpine infotainment unit looks and feels, well, aftermarket! It lacks an authentic feel and is not the most user-friendly unit.

The steering wheel has no reach adjustment, which is annoying and makes it difficult for anyone to find the perfect driving position.
As of August 2018, all Mazdas, including the BT-50, have a five-year, unlimited kilometer warranty. An added sweetener for the BT-50 if you’re into the kilometers fast is that service intervals are now 5,000 km longer, thus reducing service costs compared to the previous model. Now required every 15,000km or 12 months, whichever comes first, the first five-year fixed-price service will cost you $2,683 – a saving of $854 over the previous model.
The Ford Ranger Super Cab is a cousin of the BT-50 and, of course, Toyota’s Hilux Extra Cab, and it should be regarded as a great all-rounder. Holden Colorado Space Cab and Mitsubishi Triton Club Cab find the most suitable options.
