The huge venue has a total capacity of 5,500 seats, although it can be divided into independent thirds thanks to two usable internal walls. When divided, the outer hall can hold 1,500, while the middle hall holds up to 2,500.
With changing rooms, green rooms, VIP suites and technology that is ready for the future, Plenar offers unparalleled flexibility. Fully motorized blinds can be lowered to hide unnecessary seating and the walls are acoustically treated to keep out sound.

In 2020, we hired a full-time sustainability officer and launched a five-year sustainability strategy in 2021. This includes reducing plastic and food waste, using more renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions with the aim of achieving net zero emissions by 2030.
Our local car park on Siddeley Street is being transformed into a 2,000m2 rooftop fruit and vegetable farm. Melbourne Skyfarm is set to open and will feature sustainable restaurants, education and fantastic green spaces for events. It will also provide approximately five tons of product each year. Much of this will be donated to local food charities such as our partner, OzHarvest.

The pioneering design is an architectural masterpiece assembled from three buildings assembled from 1996 to 2018. Each reflects the vibrancy of the era and represents Melbourne with its details, colors and local materials.
The sloping blade at the Clarendon Street entrance won the prestigious Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Architecture in 1996. It was designed by Denton Corker Marshall, the firm behind many of Melbourne’s iconic buildings of the early 1990s, known for their distinctive their blades.
Later, the interior of the Melbourne Convention Center (MCC) will highlight Melbourne’s maritime history and the significance of our site’s location: the Yarra used to carry merchant ships that docked opposite our site. MCC’s wall coverings, perforated aluminum panels and floor tile design are inspired by the river and the flow of water towards Port Phillip Bay. Meanwhile, carpets and wallpaper designs reflect Melbourne’s iconic flora. The MCC will become the first convention center in the world to receive a 6-star Green Star environmental rating.
In 2018 came the wonderful expansion project of the Melbourne Exhibition Center (MEC). It has received an important 5-star Green Star environmental rating. The building’s custom ‘Goldrush’ exterior paint and precious metal-inspired interiors represent Australia’s golden age. Of course, there’s also the Goldfields Café and Bar.

We continue to innovate to ensure it remains an inspiring and inclusive space for all who walk through our doors. Located along the Yarra River and adjacent to the existing Melbourne Exhibition Centre, the new Melbourne Convention Center creates a key link to the fabric of the city centre. The project brings order to a complex project by organizing the planning to allow for flexibility and defined functional movement within the building.
The project completes the vision of revitalizing the river corridor created by the Southbank development twenty years ago and provides a base for the newly expanded Docklands area to the north. In response to this urban context, the triangular form of the plenary building recognizes three figurative axes – the colonial city, the developing city and the speculative city to come.
