Prius Hybrid For Sale – Less than three weeks from now, the 2012 Toyota Prius C – the first small hatchback in Toyota’s Prius expansion lineup – will be officially introduced to the US market at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.
It was first unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show earlier this month under the model name Aqua, and went on sale in Japan last Sunday.

According to Bloomberg, Toyota has big ambitions for the Prius C, hoping to sell around 12,000 units a month in Japan alone.

The hybrid hatchback is set to attract the interest of Japanese buyers eager to see this new compact full hybrid from the world’s leading electric car maker.
Domestically, the 2012 Toyota Prius C will compete with both the Honda Insight and the Honda Fit Hybrid, a model we haven’t seen in the United States and which is popular in Japan. .
Here in the United States, however, Honda has struggled to sell the Insight subcompact hatchback. He updated and redesigned the 2012 Insight for its third year on the market, slightly improving fuel consumption to 41 mpg city, 44 mpg highway, for a combined overall rating of 42 mpg.
The EPA has yet to release fuel consumption ratings for the 2012 Toyota Prius C, although on the lowest Japanese cycle it is rated at 82 mpg (35 km/l).

It’s likely to be rated at up to 60 mpg in the US, though Toyota says only the Prius C will offer higher mileage than the Prius hatchback’s 52 mpg city rating.
Toyota has expanded its popular Prius hybrid lineup by adding the Prius V wagon, now on sale (in fact, our holiday test car was the Prius wagon). The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid will hit US dealerships in March.
Even before the 2012 Toyota Prius C hits US dealerships, however, it is being modified in other markets. As reported by our sister agency Motoring Agency, Japanese tuners have already developed body kits and other performance improvements for the Aqua.
