Sonic Hotel is a hotel that could be better. Staff were friendly and tried to be helpful, lobby clean, breakfast okay but not outstanding. Lift service ok. First of all there is NO air conditioning in the rooms and the rooms face the street or the afternoon sun. This was a problem when we arrived but it is said to be extremely hot. Also, it would be a problem to control the hot or cool environment in the rooms. The public corridor on the floor we were on needed refurbishing and the carpet was gray with dirt. The individual rooms were clean and tidy. The hotel restaurant was OK, but only one of the two seemed to work (although it turned out there was another restaurant in the attached casino. The hotel’s location was on the edge of “downtown”. The Octagon which is downtown was 2 blocks away.

The location of the hotel is central to the Octagon and the huge dining options available. It was a quick check in and easy check out the next morning. All staff were welcoming and friendly. Our breakfast was included and there was a good selection. The room itself was spacious. Our double room included two double beds which were comfortable. The bathroom was a good size, good water pressure and soft towels.

Comfortable room with a nice large queen size bed. Fantastic view of the harbour. Good bathroom with free toiletries. Plenty of storage space. Easy walk to pubs and restaurants. A beautiful town with many attractions including Lanarch Castle and many other historic buildings.

Very centrally located. Parking can be a problem – you can pre-book parking at the hotel – and that’s a good idea – we had to park elsewhere. Room good, bathroom OK – no noise in the room. Breakfast is buffet – and is acceptable.

I was in room 715, AC, spacious, study table for my computer equipment, dining table, lighting, comfortable, stayed 3 nights. in Dunedin on business. All amenities within. WIFI was easy and unlimited. I had swordfish one night and rump steak with mushroom sauce two nights, so tender. All staff were friendly, polite, helpful and professional. Dressed to royal standard. I had a great conversation with one of the waiters who studies neuroscientific psychology, my background is forensic psychology. Breakfast was declicous, cooked for 3 mornings. Overweight now, jogging off it. Thank you Scenic Hotel. I’m from the North Island.
