The Biden administration is proposing new emissions standards that would reduce smog-forming pollutants from trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles, as part of a multi-year plan to improve air quality across the country.
The draft rule proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency, which would take effect in the 2027 model year, would reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from gasoline and diesel engines by up to 60% by 2045, the agency says. It would also set updated greenhouse gas standards for certain categories of commercial vehicles, including school buses, transit buses, commercial delivery trucks and short-haul tractors, subsectors where electrification is advancing most rapidly.

The proposed rule change was modeled after anti-smog regulations already adopted by the state of California, although federal requirements were less stringent. Many air quality advocates said the rule doesn’t go far enough.

The other would set a limit of 0.05 grams of nitrogen oxide pollution per hour of braking and power in 2027 and leave it at that level, he said.
