Queuing for social distancing is a sign of the times, but technology can make our experience at our Telstra stores convenient and fast. It’s called Add to Store and it’s been rolled into the My Telstra app since December.

You can queue up the app at any participating store before you even leave home to ensure maximum efficiency. Join store queues and you can even see how many people are ahead of you, and the app provides an estimated time for your chosen store.

Once your shift is complete, a text message will be sent to your phone and you will have 10 minutes to return to the store and see our team. To join a store queue, go to the Get Help tab in the app, select “Join Store Queues” and select from the list of participating stores.

In a new plan structure announced earlier this year, the telco waived AU$15 per month for 5G data from AU$80 per month to include it in low-cost plans next June, and AU$100 per month for 5G data.

Yesterday, Telstra announced that the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G is now available for AU$1,050, which Ackland describes as a mid-range device.

On Wednesday, the telco announced the expansion of its 5G network to 15 cities in other eastern Australian states.

These cities are Albury-Wodonga, Ballarat, Bendigo, Bundaberg, Cairns, NSW Central Coast, Coffs Harbour, Geelong, Ipswich, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Rockhampton, Townsville, Wagga Wagga and Warrnambool.

“In terms of population density, the percentage of devices we sell with 5G capability, we’re probably second only to Korea,” Telstra CEO Andrew Penn said.

For the internet, Telstra’s network engineering executive Channa Seneviratne also said the telco will soon cover nearly 4 million square kilometers of its broadband IoT network, which could expand the coverage of individual sites from 100 km to 120 km. It will arrive in early 2020.

The company also announced that it will move mobile repairs and towers to its InfraCo division, which will add A$900 million to InfraCo’s asset balance, bringing its total assets to A$11.7 billion.

On Wednesday morning, Telstra received a formal notice from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) for failing to notify mobile broadband customers of overage charges.

“The issue was caused by Telstra’s system sending text message notifications that were not received by broadband customers who were not connected to their mobile account,” ACMA said.

The problem was discovered over a period of almost six years, between September 2013 and May 2019, and reported to the ACMA by Telstra. The ACMA said Telstra automatically refunded customers who complained or were overcharged for usage charges of A$5 or less and asked other customers to refund it online.

ACMA president Nerida O’Loughlin said: “The ACMA has asked Telstra to provide regular reports on the progress of refunding affected customers.”

“Consumers have a right to make informed decisions about their broadband use, and if they don’t send those notices in the right format, people are paying for overuse without proper notice.”

Police forces are also developing an app for their officers that will allow on-the-ground reporting and eventually allow officers to record and post traffic violations.
