It’s been a tough year for the travel industry, but a local car and truck rental service is hoping for a fresh start in 2022.

Thrifty, a long-standing car and van rental company in Tamworth, has been rebranded as SIXT, Germany’s international car rental brand.

On Friday, the SIXT brand launched in Northwest New England, with ten locations in Tamworth, Armidale, Narrabri, Moray, Gunnedah and Inverell.
Local franchisee Steve Miller said he was excited to partner with SIXT, Europe’s largest rental company with more than 280,000 vehicles in 110 countries.
“We still serve our loyal customers who have been around for many, many years,” he said.
“Everyone is excited about our new brand and we have a great commitment to our local communities, especially our visitors during the Tamworth Country Music Festival and AgQuip.”

The start of the country music festival is an exciting time for business, he said, and bookings are starting to trickle in.
“It’s been tough for the travel industry since the flu started, but we’re seeing some bookings go down in January, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that we do our best.”
As the festival approaches, Tamworth City Council is also strengthening its relationship with car hire companies, which will play an important role during the festive season.
Barry Harley, the council’s director of outdoor music and events, said the partnership with SIXT came after a long relationship with the former brand.

“We’ll be running at least three trucks throughout the year, initially for mobile billboards for the holidays and then for things like the National Thunder Motorcycle Rally we’re planning for October,” he said.
“These trucks do 30,000km a year, so it’s a really novel way to get a mobile billboard.”
He said rental cars are scarce during the holiday season, so it’s important to keep the local industry growing.
“Country music festivals are lacking in every aspect, including accommodations, but also cars,” he said.

“A lot of people arrive by plane or train and are looking for a car, so there is a high demand for this rental business.
“But as people come and go throughout the year, our relationship with SIXT will grow as we look to increase the number of events we plan for the year in terms of events and sales opportunities.”
