Vacancy For Junior Urban Designer At Ibi Group, Gurugram
On a weekday afternoon in southwest Atlanta, passers-by walk past a windowed display case on a street corner. Maybe they’re looking at an aerial map of Atlanta covered in sun-soaked sticky notes. Or they see people working and talking at the table.
Atlanta City Studio is a pop-up storefront intended to engage the public in the urban design process. Run by the city’s urban planning department, the pop-up invites anyone to come in, speak with the city’s urban designer and collaborate on ideas for projects. City staff are there to answer questions and give people a way to get their ideas for improving their neighborhoods in front of the right people. Oh, and if you have questions about a broken water meter or a hole, the studio can help you, too.
Atlanta City Studios opened in 2016 in Ponce City Market, a renovated historic building with a dining and shopping hall. In 2017, the pop-up moved to its current location in Cascade Heights, a historically black neighborhood. The story of how Atlanta City Studios came to Cascade Heights highlights its public-facing nature. The community development company invited the city of Cascade Heights to tour the neighborhood in hopes of eventually revitalizing the business corridor.
“We knew [the studio] would bring in a lot of resources that we needed and it would shine a light on the neighborhood,” said Corliss Clare, secretary and founding member of the Community Development Company. “Development is moving in this direction, but we want to make sure we stay on top of it.”
Architect And Urban Designer
Cascade Heights is one of the last areas near downtown Atlanta with a plot available for development. Claire, who has lived in Cascade Heights since 2002, said this is an important moment to help guide future growth while preserving the character of the environment.
So in April 2017, the studio opened in Cascade Heights. It has six full-time employees and one fellowship student.
The studio begins by listening to residents and learning what they have achieved and what they want for the future. “We’re putting their work on the wall next to the design of the city and trying to tease out the projects,” said Kevin Bacon, director of Atlanta City Studios.
Six months into his tenure, the studio found a project to work on in Cascade Heights. This includes working with the community to design and build custom bus stops that will make Beecher Street, the main connection, more walkable and feature live bus signage and landscape plantings. Ideas came from the CDC and others in the community.

The studio also brings its own craft. The CDC asked the studios to hold sessions with business property owners on how to improve their storefronts, Clair said. It goes beyond that. The studio eventually offered a matching grant program, giving eligible property owners up to $20,000 for facade improvements. By the time the program ends in summer 2018, five businesses have received storefront redesign grants, and the city has launched a similar grant program in its West End neighborhood.
In addition to talking to the public about design projects, the studio has regular events every month to get people involved: book clubs, lunch forums, morning discussions over donuts. Individuals and groups can use the studio space for meetings.
The studio is not a public-facing design department. It represents the city as a whole. A staff member is always on duty to answer any questions, even if not design-related. “If this is your first interaction with city government, we want it to be a great experience and point you in the right direction,” said Sonia Sequeira, the studio’s manager of community engagement.
Atlanta City Studio’s two-year run in Cascade Heights is coming to an end as it moves to another part of the city. While several Cascade Heights projects have been completed, others are still in progress. The studio worked on the design of the Beecher Street Walkability Project, and the next step was fundraising. Even if the neighborhood leaves, it will continue to support the project.
Master Of Science In Urban Design
Another project envisions how to bring additional housing to the business quarter. The studio has coached CDC on how to advance this vision.
“We would never have been able to solidify our ideas and vision for the future of the business quarter and environment without the studio’s resources,” said Claire. “[For government agencies, I don’t usually have this kind of glowing praise.”
Atlanta City Studio’s next stop is downtown South, where it will open in late summer. One of the most notable upcoming developments is Centennial Yards, a 40-acre multi-purpose mini-town in the heart of the city.
“When you look at the downtown south, and a lot of other places you can excuse, we’re asked to be in the middle of it to be a shaping force of everything that’s going to happen there.”
